Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) stems from the very well-known Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and aims to help you achieve a fulfilled and meaningful life, while accepting the pain that you have endured.

ACT works in three steps: accepting any difficult or painful emotions and being mindful, choosing a direction that would be important and meaningful, and then acting accordingly. The first part involves the acceptance of things that are out of our control. Focusing on things outside of our control may cause more distress the more we focus on it. We therefore learn to let go and focus on the things we can control. We learn to live in the present moment while reconnecting with ourselves.

The second and third steps, are about taking charge and committing to the action that will push us and motivate us to go forward instead of remaining trapped in our feelings.

ACT is considered effective with a diverse range of clinical conditions: depression, OCD, workplace stress, chronic pain, the stress of a long term or terminal condition/diagnosis, anxiety and PTSD among others.
