Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is a system of psychotherapy developed by Paul Gilbert that integrates techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy with concepts from evolutionary psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, Buddhist psychology, and neuroscience. It promotes wellbeing and healing by encouraging people to be compassionate towards themselves and others. This helps with understanding on how to decrease anxiety and negative self-talk, which are linked with feeling shame and being very self-critical. People often struggle with thoughts “I am not good enough”, or “I am a failure”. These often arise from past experiences of abuse, neglect, and bullying and can lead to anxiety, depression and isolation. This can affect our self-esteem, our relationships and our decisions in life.
Through CFT, people learn how to increase self-acceptance. This therapy compliments other talking therapies that treat trauma or past painful experiences while using a self-compassionate angle that promotes soothing and generates feelings of contentment and safety.
