Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
EMDR is a unique form of psychotherapy originally designed by Francine Shapiro, to reduce or alleviate negative feelings associated with memories of traumatic events. When we experience events that are particularly distressing or upsetting, the memories attached can become "frozen in time," and although an experience may have happened long time ago, it may still feel “raw” and distressing like the first time it happened.
These memories can have a lasting negative effect on us, in the way we see ourselves or the world, on our self-esteem, our sense of safety and identity and can interfere with how we are in our relationships and everyday life activities.
EMDR appears to have a direct effect on the way the brain processes information. After successful sessions, the memory of the event is still there, but it no longer has the ‘emotional charge’ that it once had as the brain starts the healing process.
The purpose of this technique is to help you fully process your negative feelings and begin to recognize that you no longer need to hold on to some of them. EMDR was originally developed to treat the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and phobias. However, EMDR has now been found to be a very effective tool for the treatment of depression, low self-esteem difficulties as well as stress caused by chronic disease. Treatment can be delivered face to face or online. Please contact me for more information.
